Power Factor Studies

A power factor study is performed to assess the amount of reactive power being used at a plant and if it is advantageous to reduce this reactive power. The cost savings is based on utility charges and possible penalties for poor power factor. Power factor studies can determine:

  • The source of highly inductive loads
  • Optimum locations, sizing, and control of power factor correction equipment
  • If excessive harmonics require further correction (e.g. reactors)
