Harmonic Analysis

Harmonic analysis has become increasingly more important due to the application of AC & DC variable speed drives, converters and other equipment that produce harmonic distortions. These non-linear loads generate harmonic currents that interact with system impedances, which may result in equipment malfunction, premature failure, reduced equipment life and/or damage to the power system. The purpose of a harmonic analysis is to determine if harmonic voltages and currents are at acceptable levels. A harmonic study will:

  • Verify and pinpoint locations of harmonic distortion
  • Assess their impact on the power system
  • Provide solutions for reducing harmonic distortion based on cost and need
